About the New Apartments
What makes this new construction special?
400 Lake Shore will reshape the Chicago skyline with two residential towers at the former site of the famed Chicago Spire. The Spire was designed to be a twisted skyscraper by architect Santiago Calatrava and planned to be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Construction began in late 2007 right before the Recession and the stalled project sat vacant for years, and became known as the "hole in the ground".
Related Midwest is now developing two towers (North & South) at the site, creating a visual gateway to the city. Related Midwest is also partnering with The City of Chicago to redevelop DuSable Park, a 3.3-acre green space on a peninsula between the apartment towers and Navy Pier.
Will there be parking? 🅿️
There are roughly 300 underground parking spaces planned.
What makes the architecture special?
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) with David Childs have designed two residential towers that are positioned at an angle to frame the Chicago skyline and views of the lake.
The glass and metal curtain walls take inspiration from classic Chicago bay windows, and the tapered silhouettes mirror the rippling surface of Lake Michigan. The design truly stands out in the way that Chicago architecture is known for, while seamlessly fitting into the waterfront setting.
Who is Related Midwest? What else have they developed?
400 Lake Shore is the fifth rental project that Related Midwest has developed in Chicago, along with other luxury apartment buildings like 500 N Lake Shore Drive and One Bennett Park in Streeterville, and Landmark and The Row in West Loop / Fulton Market.
Related Related Companies is headquartered in New York and has offices in cities throughout the country. They have built and managed some of the most sophisticated, sought-after residential projects, and are known for large-scale, visionary developments like Hudson Yards in New York City.
